What Is the Opaque Polymer?

Product Overview

 

SHP SERIES?

Opaque polymers are non-film-forming synthetic pigments  engineered
to provide dry hiding in water-based coatings.                                    
They consist of spherical styrene/acrylic beads supplied as emulsions.
In wet paints the beads are filled with water. As the paints dry, water permanently
diffuses from the center of the beads and is replaced by air, resulting in discrete
encapsulated air voids uniformly dispersed throughout the dry paint film.
The encapsulated air voids provide optimal hiding when the paint film dries and
light is scattered as it passes from the exterior of the beads to the interior micro
voids.

 

Properties


The use of SHP SERIES opaque polymer can have a beneficial impact on

the performance properties of both interior and exterior paints. Substituting

opaque polymer for some of the titanium dioxide and pigment extender in an

interior paint makes it less vulnerable to damage from cleaning

(see Interior Scrub Panel).

In an exterior paint, on the other hand, exchanging opaque polymer for a

portion of nondurable pigment extender such as calcium carbonate can

improve durability (see Exterior Exposure Panel).

The use of SHP SERIES? Opaque polymer in paints formulated above the

critical pigment volume content (CPVC) level significantly improves their

wash ability.

The panel above contains two versions of a high-PVC paint,

one conventionally extended (left), the other made with SHP SERIES

opaque polymer (right).

When cheesecloth dipped in either water or a household cleaner is rubbed

back and forth across the panel to simulate washing, the conventionally

pigmented paint is abraded; its SHP SERIES opaque polymer counterpart

remains intact.

The use of SHP SERIES? 

Opaque polymer can significantly improve  paint durability in cases where

the extenders are not durable. Even in paints containing durable extenders,

SHP SERIES  opaque polymer can help improve durability.

 

The panels above contain conventionally pigmented (left side) and opaque

polymer (right side) versions of a flat  paint.

The formulations on the top panel contain Minex 4 nepheline syenite,

a durable extender; those on the bottom, a clay.
The opaque polymer version on the bottom panel retains its color

significantly better because the opaque polymer is more durable than

the clay it replaced.

Even in the more durable formulations on the top panel, the paint

containing opaque polymer shows better color retention.

 

 

Formulation guide

 

BASIC PROTOCOL

 

1.Reduce 5 PVC of Titanium dioxide

2.Add Opaque Polymer (SHP-40, SHP-60) 4 times

   Titanium dioxide PVC reduction

3.Increase total PVC

4.Decrease Extender proportionally or Remove

5.Remove a small amount of binder

   (Solid volume of paint should be remained constant)

6.Adjust coalescent and dispersant level
7.Fine tune to the desired properties

Background of the plastic pigment

It is well-known in paint industry that the so-called plastic pigment has

played an important role to reduce the cost of high quality water-borne

paints without sacrificing performance by replacing part of titanium dioxide

which has been mainly used as a white pigment.

In general, the methods to increase the hiding power of paint film can be

divided into two categories ; one is based on the use of the open cell of

microvoids and the other is based on the use of the closed cell of microvoids.

The typical example of utilizing microvoids open cell type may be seen in

the water-borne paint of low cost and low quality. In which the pigment

volume concentration of the paints is formulated above critical pigment

volume concentration by highly loading the so-called extender and hence

the hiding power of the paint film is increased by the formation of

interfaces between pigment and air instead of interfaces between pigment

and binder.

 

Regardless of the increased hiding efficiency, this method suffers from

inferior gloss and relatively poor resistances to water, soap solution and

stain because of the presence of the inter -connected large voids in the

dried film In order to overcome the problems mentioned above, fine non-film

forming emulsion polymer whose glass transition temperature is above 90

and has particle size is below 1.0 micron, e.g. polystyrene latexes, is

formulated into the water-borne paint to reduce the size and quantity of

continuous voids and to improve water resistance and washability with

the help of the coalescing solvent added to partly sinter the non-film

forming particles.

However, this method and suffers from the fact that the hiding power of

the paint films can not be maximized because of the lack of ability to scatter

light ray by the emulsion polymer particles which has almost same reflective

index as that of film-forming latex binder In recent years in order to overcome

the problems mentioned previously a new preparation method has been

developed where microvoid-containing polymer particles.
